A Research Group at Hamilton College

New World Nature is a historical research group based at Hamilton College since 2018. Our projects focus on how nature and science developed in dynamic tension during the early modern period.

  • Over the years, over a dozen undergraduate student researchers have joined our team. They’ve brought developing expertise in history, biology, archaeology, economics, and statistics to the table.

  • Humanists often work alone. We have adopted a scientific model of the laboratory as a creative environment, balancing individual and collaborative projects.

  • The past doesn’t often stay buried. Our projects connect the historical past to issues that shape our present — environmental change, race and racism, the medical industry.

Current Research

The project “Global Pharmacopeias” seeks to develop a collection of textual references to drugs and other medical preparations in a form that is accessible to medical researchers, biochemists, and medical historians. The collection will consist of apothecaries’ inventories and similar lists of medicaments from Europe, European imperial dominions, and other world historical regions.
